I saw him and his spoken word show at the Birchmere this past week. Amazing man.
After all the miserable stuff he’s written, he’s grown older to be a happy, insightful man. I love him. 😉
“IF I LOSE PAPER AND INK
I WILL WRITE IN BLOOD ON FORGOTTEN WALLS
I WILL WRITE ALWAYS
I WILL CAPTURE NIGHTS ALL OVER THE WORLD
AND BRING THEM TO YOU”
–Henry Rollins
I met Rollins after a show during his Black Flag days. Even then he was delightful, engaging, and downright hilarious. I am glad to see that he has grown up, like us lucky aging punks, and into an insightful and productive human being. His shared miserable experiences gave many of us hope that we would endure the shit times that challenged us, and his diverse views today continue to inform our humanity. I admire his dedication to art and wish his work eithic and commitment to writing were something I could employ in my own life. More proof Rollins is a great American in the form of another great quote, this one on democracy: “I’m gonna give mouth-to-mouth until I die!”
You summed it up. His misery was the best company, and he showed us it DOES get better…if you let it.
